March 4th was one of the best days of the year for a lot of skiers. With two to three feet of new snow, the anticipation was running high. I decided to forego the crowds of Squaw for the peaceful isolation of Jake's Peak, but could not convenience any of my roommates to do the same (the allure of a fresh, well-known canvas was too great).

I was actually the third soloist to pull into the parking lot and the second one to start skinning. God bless the first guy that set the entire skin track! Kurt, who's been skiing Jakes for at least 20 years, caught up to me on the skin and we decided to ski together our first lap. He showed me the southeast face and I was blown away. It is probably the most consistent skiing of the peak, and in the dozen times I've been here, I had never skied it before. The powder was absolutely amazing, some of the best I've had all season. But what really got me was the length and consistency of this perfect tree skiing run. Were it not for stopping to film, it would have gone on forever.

We both continued skinning and skiing for a second lap, and me a third. A small Jake's community eventually joined us out there, but there was still perfectly untouched soft snow everywhere. Abundant sunshine, deep snow, and just tons of fun powder turns, what a spectacular day.
